Photographing Emma and Jay's engagement session in Portland and their wedding at Barn Kestrel was a heartwarming journey filled with charm, laughter, and authentic moments. Their love story unfolded beautifully through both events, showcasing their unique connection and sense of adventure.
The engagement session took place on a crisp Portland afternoon, where the city’s natural beauty served as the perfect backdrop. Emma and Jay chose a combination of urban and scenic locations, reflecting their love for both the vibrancy of city life and the tranquility of nature. We started at their home in Portland along with their dog, wearing a cute scarf with “my humans are getting married” printed on. After that we headed to a waterfront park to capture natural beauty along with views of the city from the Willamette River docks. They shared inside jokes, whispered sweet nothings, and occasionally broke into spontaneous dances, making it a joy to photograph. These candid moments brought their personalities to life in the images, creating a collection that felt deeply personal and true to who they are as a couple.
Fast forward to their wedding day at Barn Kestrel, and the magic continued. This stunning venue, nestled in the Oregon countryside, offered a rustic yet elegant setting that matched Emma and Jay’s vision perfectly. The barn, with its historic charm and sprawling meadows, provided endless opportunities for creative photography.
The day began with a quiet buzz of excitement as Emma and her bridal party prepared in the charming on-site cottage. Capturing fun and candid photos of the bridal party before the ceremony. Jay, meanwhile, got ready with his groomsmen nearby, their camaraderie and laughter setting a lighthearted tone. The couple chose not to do a first look, saving the anticipation for the ceremony, which added a layer of emotion to their vows. I made sure to capture Jay’s expression as Emma walked down the aisle. Before the ceremony we photographed each party separately along with some family photos on each side.
The ceremony took place under a canopy of an ancient oak tree, with rays of sunlight filtering through the branches. Emma’s walk down the aisle was nothing short of breathtaking, and Jay’s expression as he saw her for the first time was priceless. Capturing those raw, emotional moments—tears, smiles, and loving glances—was a privilege.
After the ceremony we photographed all the family groupings along with the full bridal party. As I’m photographing I always look for those candid moments of family and friends enjoying the beautiful day together. They with Emma & Jay we captured amazing photos throughout the property, a bountiful variety of natural, candid and casually posed pictures that reflect their love for each other. I make it my goal to photograph real expressions, not cheesy and over posed. Photos the couple can look back on and be in love with.
The reception in the barn was equally magical. String lights cast a warm glow over long, rustic tables adorned with wildflowers and candles. The couple’s first dance was a highlight, as they twirled under the soft lights while their guests watched with joy. The evening concluded with sparklers and heartfelt toasts, leaving everyone with a sense of connection and celebration.
